5 Car Myths BUSTED!

When it comes to taking care of your vehicle without spending a fortune, there are many myths that claim to offer money-saving tips… but when are these worth considering, and which are pure bologna?

David Rogers spoke with Ken Clark of Fox 31 for a segment on Good Morning Colorado to address 5 common car care myths:

Myth 1: You need to replace two tire at once, never just one.

It depends on the type of drive your vehicle has (all wheel, rear wheel, four wheel drive) and the condition of the other tires. Tires are like shoes – you need pairs that match so you can stay firmly on the ground.

Myth 2: To keep your warranty valid, you have to go to the dealership to perform maintenance.

The Magnusson Moss Warranty Act 1975 states that dealers cannot require you to return for service or repairs. You can bring your new vehicle to any repair shop for maintenance and keep your warranty valid. We recommend keeping records of all maintenance, not just at the dealer.

Myth 3: Premium Gas is better for your car.

The best gasoline depends on engine. High compression engines require higher octane gas. Spending more for better fuel won’t improve your performance, but trying to save a few dollars with lower fuel can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs. Always follow the guides found in your vehicle’s manual.

Myth 4: Adding to your fuel system gives you better gas mileage.

So many “miracle” pills and solutions boast improvements for your vehicle, but we’ve found none that actually work. We’ve tested in a dynamometer for performance, gas mileage, and other claimed benefits – but saw no improvement. It’s best to use the right gas and avoid these solutions.

Myth 5: You must change your oil every 3,000 miles.

The guidelines listed in your vehicle’s manual are the longest you should go between services. If you consistently go over this threshold, your vehicle is at risk for preventable damage, major repairs and large costs down the road.
