Four Common Spring Road Hazards
Posted March 21, 2016
It is officially spring in Littleton! Between sunny days and snow showers, we know that spring weather in Colorado is anything but predictable.
As you prepare for spring activities and road trips, make sure your vehicle is prepared for any condition. Here are four common hazards on the spring roads in Colorado:
Potholes. Rapidly changing temperatures means that snow and ice will freeze and thaw in the roads… leaving behind huge potholes. These hazards not only make your rides bumpy and uncomfortable, they put your vehicle at risk. Hitting a pothole can damage your vehicle’s tires, wheels, alignment, and suspension. Swerving to avoid a pothole can also put you at risk for a car accident. Stay safe by avoiding potholes when possible. Hit a pothole? Come in right away for an alignment inspection to avoid further damage to your vehicle that leads to shortened life for your tires or costly repairs.
Wet Roads. Spring weather can mean sun, rain, and snow. Since you never know what’s in store for your daily commute, make sure your vehicle can handle it all. Check your tires (using the penny test) to make sure you have enough tread. Too little means your vehicle won’t have the traction you need to stay in control on slick and wet roads. You’ll be at risk for hydroplaning, lost control, and accidents.
Maintenance. Winter weather is tough on vehicles and may leave behind hidden threats that you won’t notice until spring. One common culprit is your car battery – cold weather is hard on batteries and may leave them susceptible to damage in the spring. It’s also a good time to check and replace both the cabin and the engine air filter for better performance (and fewer spring allergens!). Check your manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule for any needed preventative maintenance. Stop by Keller Bros. for a spring safety inspection by our ASE-Certified technicians – we’ll look for the most common spring issues as part of our thorough vehicle inspection to catch problems early and keep your family safely on the roads in Littleton.
Visibility. Warmer weather means you can spend more time out and about enjoying the beautiful Colorado spring! Before you get caught in an unexpected shower, test your windshield wipers to make sure they haven’t been damaged by ice this winter. A quick check of your vehicles headlights, tail lights, and turn signals will also make sure you can see (and be seen) on the roads at night this spring.
